There are many ways to represet a family tree. Graphical representations (views) usually look professional and are generally easy to follow - earlier generations are at the top of the page and descendants (children and future generations) are below their paraents and grandparents. But graphical views also take up a lot of page space and can get out of hand quickly as the number of descendants in a generation explodes. On these web pages I have used the following conventions to show a coloured textual representation of our family tree(s) - this is how it works...
| ... older generations above
| | | | | Antonia LESTO
1 2 3 4 5 | Vincenzo NANGANO CAPPELLO
| | | | | |
| | newer generations below ... children indented from their parents
This above example shows two people in succesive generations. In this case a mother Antonia and her first born son Vincenzo.
The numbered vertical bars (|) join people of the same family-generation.
The parent, Antonia, is always above her children and her children and are always indented to the right by an extra generation bar.
| Vincenzo NANGANO (1813 - 03 Jan 1875 Branc. aged 62 Years)
| & Giovanna BELLOMONTE (12 Feb 1824 Baida - )
Information about each person, when available, is shown in a standardised format.
Birth/Death dates are always enclosed in normal brackets with a hyphen between the birth and death date ie. (birth-date - death-date).
This example (12 Feb 1824 Baida - ) indicates that Giovanna's birth date is known but NOT her date of death.
We also know that she was born in Baida but not where she died.
Some records will show where a death is recorded, not the actual place of death.
| Vincenzo NANGANO (1813 - 03 Jan 1875 Branc. aged 62 Years) ---[Spo: 15 Nov 1839 Branc.]
| & Giovanna BELLOMONTE (12 Feb 1824 Baida - ) ---[Par: Leonardo BELLOMONTE + Rosalia PARISI [Rosa]]
Other marriage and parent information is included such as marriage date and place (eg: ---[Spo: 15 Nov 1839 Branc.])
and the spouse's parents (eg: ---[Par: Leonardo BELLOMONTE + Rosalia PARISI [Rosa]).
Notice that Rosalia has a nickname [Rosa].
Notice also that a husband and wife union is represented by a &:
Here's a larger section of the tree.

1 2 3 4 5 Dorotea NANGANO (6 Nov 1843 Branc. - 14 Feb 1935 Resuttana) ---[Spo: 20 Apr 1863 Branc.] note: see above, she marries her Aunt's son!
| | | | | & Antonino AMOROSO Branc.) ---[Par: Santo AMOROSO Don + Vincenza NANGANO]
| | | | | -Antonino NANGANO (24 Jan 1846 Branc. - 14 Nov 1849 Branc.)
| | | | | Leonardo NANGANO CAPPELLO (9 Jul 1848 - 18 Nov 1929 Branc.) ---[Spo: 25 Apr 1872 Branc.]
| | | | | & Antonia LESTO (1 Jan 1846 Branc. - 1924 Palermo) ---[Par: Michelangelo LESTO + Carolina SCADUTO]
| | | | | | Vincenzo NANGANO CAPPELLO (18 Feb 1873 Branc. - 14 Dec 1902 Branc.)
You can see that -Andrea NANGANO (16 Nov 1841 - 13 Sep 1852) died just before he'd turn 11 years old.
Early deaths before a child bearing age and show with a coloured hyphen - and they usually indicate infant deaths
(eg. -Antonino NANGANO) but sometimes stillbirths.
Here is an index of placenames used on these trees.
